Moths – Moths can also do a lot of damage to clothing and animal fiber items. Typically, Alberta deals with the Clothes and the Indian Meal Moth

In Canada, mosquitoes are less likely to spread disease than in the tropics, but the irritation caused by the bites can still be distressing particularly for children.

How to Keep Flies Away

For many species of flies , it is important to keep all food away so as not to attract flies and provide a place for fly larvae to grow:Immediately clear away food and liquid spillages

  • Always cover food – flies can spread disease by landing on food before we eat it
  • Clean food spills and debris from under and around kitchen appliances and countertops
  • Make sure all garbage bins have tightly sealed lids
  • Keep compost tightly covered
  • Clean up after your pets – feces the perfect breeding ground for flies and also may end up on your food

Prevent flies being able to develop in standing water:

  • Ensure all drains are kept in clear and running order
  • Treat drains that seem to have flies with a cleaning agent such as bleach
  • Ensure gutters are not blocked and check regularily
  • Do not leave standing water around (eg in watering cans or pails)
  • Introduce fish into garden ponds to eat fly larvae

Prevent flies entering your home by:

  • Keep windows and doors closed or block out the light with curtains after dark
  • Be sure to have fly screens installed on all doors and windows to keep pests out
